All my favorite things are temporary

I’ve done a lot of “cancelled X, back to Y” posts, like it’s this massive shift in my life. It’s not. I switch between different services that all do the same thing pretty regularly.

Lately that hasn’t been for some profound reason, or for something I philosophically disagree with one of the devs on. It’s mostly just because I get bored with one and want to try something different for a month or two. Or because I don’t wanna pay $25 for Kagi Ultimate this month, so Google is just fine.

I wrote about switching to Mastodon recently, and then a few days later I moved back to Micro.blog for my gateway to the Fediverse. I’m a diehard Digg fan from back in the day, but right now I still prefer Piefed/Lemmy over it — sentimental value aside.

You’d think I’d be all in on the Fediverse since Micro.blog integrates so well with it; Micro.blog is my home base after all. Piefed is also part of the greater Fediverse. But Bluesky is my favorite microblogging platform, and I like the ATProtocol, (or at least what I can understand about it) more than I like ActivityPub. Or do I, honestly?

That’s the thing: I’m not a dev who has a solid grasp on which one’s actually “better.” I just prefer Bluesky over Mastodon, and I like the vibes on Piefed more than Reddit or Digg.

I was always an Android fanboy with a MacBook Pro. Now I’m an iPhone guy with a Microsoft Surface running Debian Linux.

I’m not loyal to any brands, really. Not permanently anyway. Or at least, I try not to be.

I’m not even completely sure whether I like Coke or Pepsi better for fuck’s sake.

My first (decent) car was a Volvo S70 and back then I swore I’d never drive another brand. Then I got a little Honda Fit and now I tell everyone Honda makes the best, most dependable car on the market. In five years that might switch to Toyota.

Use whatever things you like. They’re probably all intertwined anyway, if you dig deep enough.
