So I made a Mastodon account
I migrated my Micro.blog fediverse account over there, too. Partially because I wanted a little more control over how my blog shows up on the fediverse, but mostly because I finally got my invite to Surf (from Flipboard) and I was curious about unifying all my feeds in the same place.
I can’t favorite or repost Mastodon posts from the Micro.blog fediverse instance — and that’s by design. Honestly, really great design. But I wanted to go all in on the omni-feed experience.
Really liking it so far! Back in the day, I was obsessed with Flipboard. I had a couple of decently popular magazines even, but over time I just lost interest for whatever reason.
Switched to different apps, started blogging… stopped caring so much about apps and more about the social web. But that’s where Surf really shines, so you can see why it’s intriguing to me right now. It’s the latest version of the omni-feed app — like Iconfactory’s Tapestry, and the new Reeder — both of which accept RSS feeds and social media accounts alike.
Speaking of Reeder, I’m actually still a huge fan of Reeder Classic. I think it’s pretty much considered obsolete now that the new Reeder is out, but honestly I love RSS and I could never completely abandon the classic self-hosted experience. I use Miniflux as the backend, and it works great. So far it’s been the best self-hosted thing I’ve ever hosted myself.
Back to the Mastodon thing though — I’ve been off the fediverse for a while.
I liked that it’s just sort of on autopilot with Micro.blog. Makes it easy to automagically have a presence on an entire social network you don’t ever have to visit. I actually like the lack of post metrics. It’s one less arbitrary number and obligation; feeling like you have to return the favor of favorites and Boosts.
Micro.blog rewired that part of my brain over the last couple of years. Instead of someone interacting with my post and kindly, but silently, reciprocating with a little gold star, I’m more prone to actually commenting back now. The conversation is the interaction that matters. Watch number go up? Not so much.
So after moving to Micro.blog, this is kind of like finally quitting cigarettes and a couple years later saying ah, what the hell. I can have one every now and then, as a treat.
But Micro.blog will always be my home base. And while I’ve totally blogged, pretty recently even, about why I don’t do POSSE, the idea is growing on me.
But never to my Bluesky account; that’s reserved for the sacred art of shitposting. Mastodon, however? I’ve been away for so long that I’m starting back at square one. I’m genuinely curious about approaching social media in a non-shitpost-ey way.
